FAQs

The concept is simple.

Every day throughout the month, you are to write a new piece and send it before the deadline.

Starting on the last day of the previous month at about 10pm GMT, and every evening throughout the month, you will receive an instruction, to help you along the way and get your creative juices flowing.

You don’t have to follow the instructions, but boy is it more fun if you do!

You will then have 36 hours to write and send your play in, which will be due by 10am GMT the following-following day.

The final play will be due on the 1st of the following month

If you pick STANDARD ENTRY, there are only two rules:

  1. Write a new and complete piece every day
  2. Deliver it by the 10am GMT deadline (not a second after 09:59:59)

If you pick UNTIMED ENTRY, there are no rules. You can do what you like.

As long as you can give it, be that ten minutes on your commute each day or eight-hour overnight sessions.  Just send us something 36 hours after receiving your prompt. For example, if you get your writer prompt 10pm on a Monday, your response is due before 10am on the Wednesday.

All you need is an email address to receive writer prompts and reply from within the deadlines.

The money sent from anyone who is doing the Standard Entry goes into a pot, out of which The Literal Challenge takes 25% admin fees to cover costs.

At the end of the month, the rest of the money is then split between anyone who has completed the challenge.

Do note, that as per our T&Cs, we can not guarantee that people will receive more than they put in, as that depends on the number of participants dropping out. In previous years, participants have always received at least what they have put in, plus a little bit extra, but we can't guarantee that will always be the case.

If we don’t get a response within the challenge’s time limit you will be notified you’ve been disqualified from the financial reward. Our judgement on time keeping is final.

You will be disqualified.

Yes. Even if you're a second late!

Yes! You can still keep receiving the writer prompts and playing along to become an “honorary completer” but you will not receive any financial benefits.

Anything you like. Our writer prompts are useful as starting points but are not rules to follow. This is about committing to writing something each day of the challenge. Do that and everyone is happy.

We don't care as long as you consider the work original and complete.

It could be one page or a hundred. The choice is yours.

No. One new piece of writing, every single day.

You don't have to respond to the prompt directly. As long you write a new piece of writing, we don't care what it's about. So if you don't like it - write about something else. Just make sure it's new and make sure it's delivered on time.

Not at all. Our writer-prompts know no borders.

Do note that all timings and deadlines are GMT, and it’s your responsibility to adapt it to your time zone.

We don’t care. If you’ve made a genuine response to a prompt and written something new, then you have completed the daily challenge. Well done.

There's a whole community of people doing this with you. So go on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and support each other. The team is incredibly busy during the challenge-months, so it might take us longer than respond, but if you really need us, contact us through the CONTACT US page.

We might, but chances are low.

We do open all the files to do a spot check and make sure the deliveries are kosher.

If you write something you really don't want us to read - you will have the option of leaving a note to tell us not to read it - and we won't!

If you write something you really do want us to read - wait till the end of the month, and we'll see what we can do.

No.  Seeing the daily writer-prompts as they are published is the only way to be involved. Trust us. They are brilliant surprises.

You do and you always will. We are not publishers and will not share your work without your say so or for profit.

We can’t stop you, but we’d rather if you didn’t.

Yes. You can buy for someone else, but you will have to get in touch with us with the registration details for your gifted friend.

You need to click on the item from the CHALLENGES page and then follow the instructions.
